Dance has certainly been enjoying a heightened public profile of late. This month we report on the National Dance Awards (page 12), where Dame Beryl Grey commended “Strictly Come Dancing” for bringing dance as a whole, specifically ballroom, to the attention of the nation, and in particular for highlighting the challenges of dance training. At the same event, Arlene Phillips reiterated the fact that now more than ever, dance in all its varieties operates on a level playing field. The media have been quick on the uptake: “[Strictly Come Dancing and Strictly Dance Fever] indicated a public appetite for dance that has, by and large, been reflected in auditoriums up and down the country” (Telegraph, Dec 23, 2006), and my favourite quote of all “...It’s not just classical ballet that’s popular. It’s dancing in general... [Strictly Come Dancing] has a direct line to our deep human need to dance. It presses the button that says: I could do that, and I’d love to.” (The Guardian, December 23, 2006). On that high note, enjoy this month’s issue! Katie Gregory, Editor On the cover: |
