November 2008

Last month was a busy one in the dance calendar with back-to-back events including the prestigious International Championships at the Royal Albert Hall where our cover stars, Mirko Gozzoli and Alessia Betti, took first place in the Professional Ballroom category. With the DanceScene pages in this feature issue a variety of reports from events leading up to the competition, and there’s also a news round-up and exclusive photographs to whet your appetite ahead of the full report next month. Iris Findlay writes from the BDF’s Night of 100 Stars (page 16), where the biggest names in dance come together year after year to perform to an audience filled to capacity. It’s certainly an impressive exercise in organisation – watching the action this year I marvelled at the smooth running of the programme, which features several competitions alongside non-stop cabaret performances, and ran – as always – without a hitch. As Rachelle Stretch discovers in Risky business (page 33), organising competitions is becoming an increasingly difficult task. And, with one of the biggest – the British National Championships – taking place this month, it’s more important than ever to consider how the changes we make today could affect the future.
