July 2008

Big Dance takes to the streets of England this month, and while the festival’s origins are London-based, this year’s varied programme of events will span the length and breadth of the country. So, whether you’re in Land’s End or Liverpool there’s something going on near you, with chances to watch, have a go, and even break a few world records in the process. This month we meet Jacqueline Rose, whose original idea for the festival stemmed from a desire to unite the ethnically and culturally diverse inhabitants of the capital. She explains how this initial stimulus led to the creation of Big Dance in 2006, and how the 2008 event is set to build on the success of its predecessor. This month’s issue follows a similar theme, celebrating the UK’s eclectic dance scene with reports ranging from salsa at the International Dance Festival Birmingham, to ballroom at the Blackpool Dance Festival. With so much dance on offer, it’s the perfect time to branch out and try a new style, and whether it’s acrobatics or Appalachian clog dancing that takes your fancy, the possibilities, it would seem, are endless!
