August 2008

So, the “Strictly” rumours have begun. From the celebrities involved to the number of extra weeks, the hotly anticipated sixth series is rapidly notching up column inches in preparation for its return to BBC1 next month. In this issue Arlene Phillips, no stranger to the headlines herself, talks about her most recent project – choreographing the new musical adaptation of Flashdance – prior to her return to the judge’s seat. Phillips, whose pre-“Strictly” career spans the length and breadth of the entertainment industry, got her first taste of ballroom and Latin dance much earlier on. Born in Manchester, childhood holidays at an aunt’s in Blackpool meant the annual dance festivals were familiar territory from the start. 2008 of course saw the 83rd year of the largest and longest running of them all – the Blackpool Dance Festival – and in part two of our full coverage Paul Harris reports from the Exhibition and Formation events. Also in this issue, I sample some of flamenco’s finest at the annual Suma Flamenco Festival in Madrid, while Carole Edrich checks out the dance talent a little closer to home at another successful Big Dance week in London.
